Your backup recorder audio is noticeably worse. It's quieter than the main chain. Boosting reveals hiss. You're glad you have it, but it's not pretty.



How the problem shows up

You run redundancy: main recorder plus a backup. Often the backup input has less clean gain. When you actually need the backup, you find out it was gain-starved.



The problem

Backup audio should be usable, not just "exists." A weak gain stage turns your safety net into a compromise.



The fix

Strengthen the mic signal so both main and backup chains receive healthy level without hot gain.

Mic → Cloudlifter → Split (phantom power +48V ON) → Main Recorder + Backup Recorder


Note: Cloudlifters work with passive dynamic and passive ribbon microphones. They are not compatible with condenser microphones that require phantom power through their XLR connection.



Choose your Cloudlifter

If you want the simplest setup: use the CL-25 Mini. It plugs directly onto the mic's XLR output, and your single XLR cable connects from the CL-25 Mini to the split point or first input — strengthening the source before both recorders receive the signal.

If you already own a Cloudlifter: the CL-1, CL-2, and CL-4 do the same job (clean mic activation). They use the standard inline connection in your mic chain.
