Cloudlifters increase the sensitivity of your microphone and bring its natural tonal characteristics into focus. The single-channel Cloudlifter CL-1, two-channel Cloudlifter CL-2, and rack-mountable four channel Cloudlifter CL-4 all provide up to +25dB of ultra-clean gain with fixed impedance loading at 3kΩ, optimized for a wide variety of microphones. Each one is designed to improve the sensitivity and performance of lower-output microphones dramatically. Whether you’re using an expensive, professional-grade microphone/preamp combination or common microphones with a basic home setup, Cloudlifters provide way more signal from the microphone itself, allowing the preamp to operate in its optimal gain range by reducing the amount of gain needed. This reduces noise and distortion, bringing more of the microphone’s natural character into focus. The Cloudlifter uses +48v Phantom Power but does not pass power to the mic. For this reason, the Cloudlifter is a great way to keep your ribbon and tube mics safe from exposure to Phantom Power while providing the extra gain they need.

As a result of increased sensitivity and ultra-clean gain, the amount of gain required by the preamp is reduced significantly. This also reduces noise and improves the natural frequency response of the mic by allowing the preamp or interface to operate within its comfort zone!

Neither my old-school Mackie analog board nor my Solid State Logic SSL2 digital interface had enough gain to get a decent level out of a Shure SM7B, so I knew I had to add a boost. The original Cloudlifter CL-1 helped, and was usable with some post-processing, but I was still turning up the gain higher than I'd like, so I switched to the CL-X, which has 36db of gain, versus 25db on the CL-1, and that did the trick. The SSL2 still needs to be turned up (the SM7B really lives up to its low-output reputation), but it doesn't need to be maxed out to get a usable level from the SM7B. As far as I can tell, both Cloudlifters added no color to the sound of the microphone, and no discernible noise. There are cheaper units out there, but the build quality of the made-in-the-USA Cloudlifter is worth the price.

It is perfectly suited for using low-output microphones to capture quieter source material such as acoustic instruments, podcasting, ASMR, or even Foley. We partnered with CineMag to develop a custom nickel transformer with a huge bandwidth, adding the element of dynamic character. Combined with the ultra-clean gain of the Cloudlifter core, the CL-X is responsive to the signal you give it.
